Today I Saw...

A different side of Haiti. Early this morning, we headed out on the 6:30 boat bound for Killick. Once we arrived in Killick, we grabbed our stuff and left with truck in tow bound for Port-Au-Prince to play/sing at the opening of a new hospital here in Haiti. After we got through the hustle and bustle of the traffic and all that I saw yesterday, we began to climb the hills. The further and further we got from the downtown area, the nicer Haiti appeared to be. After about one hour (give or take) we arrived at the site of the new hospital. We quickly off-loaded the gear and set-up. Slowly, guests began to arrive...and all of the beautiful people I saw, were dressed very nicely and arrived in very nice cars. It was such a different picture of Haiti than what I experienced yesterday. I spoke with a guest at the ceremony today, who also happened to sing Haiti's National Anthem (I sang our Anthem along with the BQ), and she said that most of the people who are less wealthy live in the lower part of Haiti, and the more affluent people live in the hillsides and further away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. It seems like Haiti, in some ways, is similar to the states. Some parts of the country, are very well off while others are pretty poor. It was nice to see that the whole country isn't suffering...and that there is a different lifestyle available. I just pray that those who want it, can get to it, can change their lifestyle if that is what they desire. God Bless the people of Haiti, and those who work to make Haiti a better place for it's people!

Evenings here on the Comfort are usually filled with a meeting or two. So last night at our confirmation brief, I was blown away by some numbers! So check it out. For the seven days that med-ops were in full operation...there were:

3,628 patients were seen by a med tech
3,335 patients were seen by a dental tech
2,014 patients were seen by optometry
5,868 prescriptions were filled
1,178 veterinarian services were performed
and.....
out of the 200 patients screened for surgery, 87 surgeries were performed!

These numbers do not include yesterday (16 Apr), or today. By the end of the Haiti trip, I will be interested to see what the total number for everything will be!

Simply AMAZING!! Big shout out to everybody on the Comfort who continue to work harder and harder each day to make the lives of so many just a little bit easier...

Thanks for stopping by....
Keisha

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
