Happy Easter!
It has been a very Happy Easter for me! This morning I woke bright and early to get ready for my very first 'O-R' experience. I ate breakky (breakfast) really early and was down in the O-R by 6:30. I went into the ladies changing area and got into my scrubs, little bakers hat and put on the shoe covers. I was crazy excited! After spending some time talking with some of the other observers, two med students and a dental student, we headed into the O-R for the surgery. Now I have always loved to watch surgery shows ever since I was a little tike. Trauma. Life in the ER is one of my favorite reality shows. So while some people tense up at the sight of a paper cut, I am all about the blood and guts...tee hee. The patient, 13 month old Neritza, had an Annoplasty. The decription of what she had is quite extensive so if you want to know what it is, check out Wikipedia to get the general idea. I was there from the very first incision until the very last suture was in place. It was something I will never forget and I am so thankful that I got the chance to check it out. Thanks to Dr. Safford and his staff for allowing me, a non-medical guru, to sit in today!
Since I attended the surgery today, I was unable to go to the Sunrise Service in which the Brass Group played. I heard from some of the folks that the service went great and that the group sounded lovely...After their service, they went ashore to play at an Easter Mass at a local Catholic church. They just got back so I don't have any details yet...but when I get them, I will be sure to let you guys know how it went for them.
Aaron and I went out again today and played around the ship. The CASREC was our first stop again today. There were a lot of patients so we lucked out! It turned out great! After the CASREC, we stopped by the lab and played a tune for our friends there...then we headed to the Admin area of the ship. What a lively bunch they were! They were awesome! In a joking manner, I said to them..."Oh I forgot my coffee can for you guys to put some money in. We're not getting sea pay you know". I was totally kidding, and yes we are getting sea pay as far as I know...I was just making jokes. So then, someone put their gi-normous coffee mug in front of us and people starting putting money in it! I quickly had to tell them I was just kidding...otherwise, we would have gone to jail! I thought that was awesome though...
Aaron and I just got back from playing at the HOTEL again for the patients awaiting surgery. It was awesome again! Cute kids...awesome teens and adults...and the nursing staff all made our trip to the HOTEL a really great experience. I can't wait until the next time we play for everyone. By the end of our set, we had everyone up dancing. You would have thought that we were at a club somewhere.
I think that tomorrow, Aaron and I may go out to the island and play for the folks waiting to be seen by the medical staff ashore. It is not yet finalized so I'm not certain...but I will definitely update that if we get the chance!
I had a great Easter, and hope that you guys did too!
Thanks for stopping by....

Happy Easter Everybody (Keisha),
from all of us here in the Raymond House.
We couldn't make it to service either today, but we did focus on the whole meaning of this easter season, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thank You God! I let the kids boil some eggs and colored them and Janelle had took Jeremie leftover plastic eggs from school (28)and put money and candy in them and had a Egg hunt downstairs. They had a ball, it reminded me of when we use to be at church of course, but when we would be at aunt dee-dee house and they would put $1, $5, $10 bills in them.
I am so Happy that you were able to view a Live surgery. thanks for sharing.
Y'all jukin it up on that boat, all you need is some crunk music and some spinners. LOL! I was laughing at the sea pay joke, and it sounded like the givers were trully gonnna give to y'all and not looking for security or military police to find out do y'all belong there.
Until next time, Later and continue to enjoy urself out there. Love ya...
Hey Keisha! What an amazing experience. How cool is it to watch doctors/surgeons helping to heal someone you've gotten to know? I guess most of us don't think about the poverty in some places, but I've been so inspired by the stories I've heard from you and the others about your adventures so far. I've cried at just about every email, and now I'm so glad I can follow your blog. Take care and Happy Late Easter! --Rebecca Collins
